Offline reading of ProQuest e-books

A new application, Ebook Central Reader App, is now used for offline reading of selected e-books on the ProQuest Ebook Central platform. It replaces Adobe Digital Editions (ADE), which was previously required for these e-books. As a result, it is no longer possible to download e-books from Ebook Central into ADE for offline reading. Notes stored in Adobe Digital Editions cannot be transferred to the new application.

If you have not used offline e-book reading, nothing changes for you.

Which e-books require the new application?

The application is required only for downloading entire DRM-protected e-books that previously required Adobe Digital Editions (this concerns several hundred titles at Charles University). The loan period is limited to one day. E-books with restrictions on the number of simultaneous users (e.g. 1U, 3U) cannot be downloaded; please use online reading in your browser or download chapters/sections instead.

What remains unchanged?

  • DRM-free e-books can still be downloaded and opened in any application of your choice.
  • Downloading individual chapters as PDFs remains available.
  • Online reading in Ebook Central is unchanged. The new application is only an addition for offline reading and does not replace the web reader.

How do I use the new application?

Detailed instructions in English are available on the Ebook Central support page. You may also follow the video tutorial or use the brief guide below:

Go to ProQuest Ebook Central and sign in to the platform using your CAS credentials.

  • Open Profile → EBC App Devices → Manage | Get Code.
  • Select Get Login Code.
  • Download and install the application.
  • Complete the application registration using the 7-digit code (up to six devices can be registered).

Important: We recommend installing the application only on personal or non-shared devices. For shared computers, please use online reading in your web browser.
